Aloha! My name is Bruce Pratt, and I am a candidate for the State House of Representatives for the 6th district, which includes Kailua-Kona, Hello, Aloha, and Kahlua. It is widely known that Hawaii has the highest cost of living in the nation. Unfortunately, our taxes contribute to this high cost. Kiplinger has shown that we have the highest effective income tax rate in the nation. Additionally, according to the American Petroleum Institute, Hawaii has the third-highest gasoline tax in America. The tax foundation informs us that Hawaii is one of only seven states that fully tax groceries. Despite the high taxes we pay, it seems like we are not making progress. A report on Hawaii News Now in February of this year highlighted that our teachers are the lowest paid nationally. Moreover, various reports suggest that we have between 35 and 40 billion dollars in unfunded liabilities in this state. A considerable portion of this debt is linked to retirement benefits for our state workers. I have decided to run for the State House of Representatives to address these issues. My primary goals are to lower your taxes and bring efficiency, accountability, and transparency to our state government. On November 8th, I kindly request your vote. Mahalo.
