P>What's up? This is Rocky, a Prosperity Tax Service representative. I was asked a question that I wanted to answer via video. The question was, "Can I claim my wife's old student loans and claim her as a dependent to avoid having my tax return taken for repayment?" The answer is no. You cannot claim your wife as a dependent. The IRS states that your wife or spouse is not a qualified dependent. However, a tax professional can file a form that could prevent a portion of your tax return from being taken. Additionally, we could file a form so that a portion of your tax return may be returned to you. Again, this is Rocky Miller from Prosperity Tax Service, and we look forward to seeing you.
